Recovering From Male Breast Reduction Surgery

The first three postoperative days are the hardest time for Gynecomastia patients. Patients need complete rest at home while their bodies heal. Movements of the elbow and wrist are okay, but vigorous movements of the shoulder joints have to be kept to a minimum especially during the first few days following surgery.

Sun Exposure after Gynecomastia Surgery

Exposure to direct sun following surgery should be avoided for at least six weeks until bruising, and most swelling has diminished. Sun rays only prolong swelling, and too much sun can create permanent discolouration. Exposure to the sun can also cause the scar to become more noticeable due to pigmentation. Thus, when you do go outside, and it’s a scorching day, make sure you wear light clothing, a hat and sunblock.

Post Surgery Scars

Most scars post surgery are quite noticeable. However, after administering thousands of male breast reduction surgeries, experienced surgeons like Dr Mark Magnusson aim to make the incision as small as possible, in an area that keeps the resulting scar concealed.

Nipple-Areola Sensation and Gynecomastia Surgery

Patients with significantly enlarged breasts may require liposuction. Many patients experience temporary loss of feeling to be insignificant, and it generally returns after one year for many patients.

Natural Shrinking of the Areola After Male Breast Reduction

Natural shrinking of the entire areola following male breast reduction surgery is expected. The width of the areola will minimise about 10-50% from its original size. This often develops in most patients when excessive amounts of glandular tissue are removed. Thus when a substantial amount of breast tissue is eliminated over 90% of patients will experience a natural process of a decrease in the areolas diameter.

Massage Post Gynecomastia Surgery

A gentle massage is preferred to a rough massage, and it should not feel painful but somewhat tender. Massage following gynecomastia is not necessary in many cases, but it can be helpful with swelling and scarring but does not improve the adipose and glandular tissue that remains.

Pain Post Male Breast Reduction

Pain tolerance is very individual. For the majority of patients, the pain felt is moderate, and for some, their expectations were worse than their overall experiences. When a more complex liposuction is administered, patients may experience soreness similar to that of the pain you feel after a day full of exercise. Sometimes patients are given a prescription, but most do not need more than extra strength Tylenol.

Alcohol, Diet, Medications and Gynecomastia Surgery

All nutritional supplements should be avoided for the same reason. Consumption of alcohol should be minimised starting one week before surgery and one-week post surgery and should be completely avoided a few days before and after surgery.
